BLUE NOTE'S Gonna Let It Shine
          ODETTA
Named After the Great Odetta Holmes

Odetta Holmes dies aged 77

Highly influential folk singer Odetta Holmes has died of heart disease. She was 77-years old.

The African-American singer-songwriter was also an actress and outspoken human rights activist. She
has played a crucial role in shaping music as we know it today, having influenced heavyweights such as
Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

While Dylan has often cited the singer as the spark behind his interest in folk music, Baez said, "Odetta
was a goddess. Her passion moved me. I learned everything she sang."

Holmes has been honored for her contribution to music in many ways. In 1999, then-president Bill Clinton
presented her with a National Medal of Arts. Five years later she was given the Visionary Award at the
Kennedy Center, and the following year the Library of Congress honored her with the Living Legend
Award.

Always interested in politics and civil rights, Holmes spoke at Martin Luther King Jr's commemoration in
San Diego this year, and had wanted to sing at Barack Obama's upcoming inauguration; a dream that will
sadly remain unfulfilled.

Hers, however, was a life full of significant achievements of both historical and musical import.
